One Way or Another: Asian American Art Now
The exhibition, organized by the Asia Society, brings
together seventeen artists from across the United
States who challenge and extend the category of Asian
American art. The title of the exhibition, drawn from the
1978 Blondie hit song, suggests a non-formulaic way
of making or seeing art. The artists and their works
characterize the freedom to choose, manipulate, and
reinvent different kinds of languages and issues,
whether formal, conceptual, or political. Together, they
defy a definitive conception of Asian American art. The
exhibition includes painting, sculpture, video, and
installation art by contemporary Asian American artists
who—with a strong sense of being American and an
acute critical consciousness of world matters—grapple
with issues of self in a way that sets them apart from
their predecessors.

Lotus Moon: The Art of Otagaki Rengetsu
Otagaki
Rengetsu (1791-1875) was a Buddhist nun, a
woman of great beauty and one of Japan’s most
celebrated artists. Admired primarily for her exquisite
calligraphy, Rengetsu was also a poet and ceramic
artist, often inscribing her poems in her own
calligraphy onto ceramic vessels, a unique blending of
art forms for any artist in Japanese history. Her work
was so popular during her lifetime that every household
in Kyoto was said to own her pottery, and today scrolls
and ceramics bearing her calligraphy are highly sought
after.

Kanemitsu in California during the 1960s and 1970s
Nicknamed Mike by his friend Jackson Pollock,
Matsumi Kanemitsu was an abstract painter of the New
York School during the 1950’s. But in 1961, June
Wayne, founder and director of the Tamarind
Lithography Workshop, invited him to Los Angeles to
create lithographs. He mastered the new medium
quickly, and combined with his affinity for watercolor,
he produced the wet look that became a hallmark of his
work. An invitation to teach at the Chouinard Art School
triggered his move to Los Angeles in 1965, around the
time the rise of Pop Art was hindering the sales of
Abstract Expressionist paintings in New York.
Kanemitsu denied any association to calligraphy and
zen, but perhaps in the eyes of Americans, his
painterly Asian elements hid his social concern.

Addressing HIV/AIDS in Bengali Scroll Paintings
See twenty-six colorful and fascinating works of art
created by the Patua of West Bengal, India—
multimedia artists who paint narrative scrolls and then
perform sung poetry while unrolling their scrolls to tell
their stories to the audience. This traditional
performance genre once drew its stories exclusively
from the great Indian epics. In recent years, however,
local non-governmental organizations have begun
commissioning scrolls addressing health issues,
including HIV/AIDS education.

Chinaman’s Chance:
Views of the Chinese American Experience
The discovery of gold in California drew unprecedented
numbers of Chinese immigrants. By 1865 about 50,000
Chinese had come to “Golden Mountain” to try their
luck. The majority of the Transcontinental Railroad’s
east-bound track was built by Chinese. To conquer the
treacherous terrain, workers were often suspended
from the top of cliffs to plant explosives. It was from
this dangerous task that the phrase “A Chinaman’s
Chance in Hell” was coined. Later shortened to“Chinaman’s
Chance,” the phrase unfortunately defined
many immigrants’ experiences. Three contemporary
artists – Amanda Ross-Ho, Zhi Lin, and Arthur Ou – will
examine the diverse Chinese American experience from
the days of the Transcontinental Railroad’s construction
to today.

A Connoisseur's Delights:
Indian Paintings from the Nasli and Alice
Heeramaneck Collection
In 1969 the Los Angeles County Museum of Art
purchased its first major art collection, one that was
described in contemporary newspapers as the greatest
of its kind in the Western world. The purchase
consisted of 345 South Asian and Himalayan
sculptures, paintings, and decorative objects. The
twenty-nine paintings in this installation, which range in
date from the mid-sixteenth through the early
nineteenth century, were produced in the Hindu
kingdoms of northern India and the Himalayan foothills.
They include some of the best Rajput and Pahari
paintings in the Heeramaneck collection and highlight
the keen aesthetic sensibilities of a discerning collector.

A Masterpiece Restored:
LACMA's Tibetan Painting of Yama and Yami
One of the largest and most significant Tibetan
ceremonial thangka paintings in the renowned
collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art is
an extraordinary eastern Tibetan image of the Vajrayana
Buddhist protective deities Yama and his sister Yami,
entitled Yama and Yami. In this thangka, dating from
circa 1675–1725, Yama is depicted in his conceptual
form of the Outer Yamaraja (Lord of Death), who
protects Buddhists and monasteries from droughts,
bandits, and other evils. Despite its art historical
importance and strong visual presence, it has never
been publicly displayed because of its fragile surface
condition.

Growing Up Chinese American:
Childhood Toys and Memories
Our childhood toys and experiences can deeply
influence how we remember the past, understand
our place in the world in the present, and lead
grown up lives in the future. Growing Up Chinese
American: Childhood Toys and Memories is a new
exhibit that explores this relationship by presenting
children’s toys from the Chinese American Museum
permanent collection and the personal stories of their
owners. By exploring facets of everyday life for
children of Chinese descent coming of age in a rapidly
changing 20th century America, Growing Up Chinese
American presents a complex picture of how childhood
can shape our adult lives in subtle but meaningful
ways.
